Reawakening Dr. Petö’s Conductive Pedagogy Seminar

The idea to offer this seminar came to me as I was going through my Autumn Term diary. The month of October is very special to me, as I always feel reenergized during this month of the year. Every October my whole being seems to be infused with the richness of the colours and the special rays of the autumn sun; reminding me of childhood feelings, flavours and aromas. As I was turning the pages in my diary I remembered the conference we ran at Southampton University in 2002 on the same dates and it brought me back pleasant memories.

So much has happened since…

I would like to offer this seminar with the intention to share with you what I learned at the Petö Institute in Budapest.

I would like to remind you of the things that matter to us and of the intention that is true and of the performance that is serving that intention.

The content and structure of the course is set out in a sequence, as I was trained and gained my knowledge and experience at Petö, from the time I stepped through the door. It would be my pleasure to serve you and lead you in your endeavour in providing holistic, integrated and meaningful services for children, adults and their families whose lives are affected by neurological dis-abilities.

  1. Judit,

I wish you the very best of luck with your ambitious programme (by the way, you do not say who particularly the course is for, is it conductors?) but I was interested by one matter in your introduction, something that I been puzzled about since I first fell into the conductive bear-pit in the early eighties.

You call the seminar: 'Reawakening Dr Petö's conductive pedagogy'.

    You have also written:

'I would like to offer this seminar with the intention to share with you what I learned at the Petö Institute in Budapest.'

Are these two the same, how might they differ, does this matter? 'Professor' P was long gone before you turned up at the then State Institute. This was not just a matter of time, There had been in the meanwhile the influence and the requirements of the Education Ministry and its inspectors, Hungary itelf was very different fron how it had been in Stalinist times and, much closer to home, there were the all-pervading effects of 'the doctor lady'.

We do know, for example, (at least we have Dr H's word for it) that in many respects a fundamental pedagogic feature of parent-and-child work was post-Petö (though who it came from we can only guess). Dr P'spedagogy at that age group just hadn't worked. What else of the pedagogy that you learnd in the mid-80s might have been post-Petö? And does it matter.

I'm not asking you to pre-empt the experience of your seminar but it would be nice if, once the seminar is over, you could share your thoughts on such matters, and those of your participants too perhaps, here on Sourcesense.

  2. Dear Andrew,
    Thank you.
The seminar is suitable for conductors and all involved or wishes to be involved with Conductive Education. Everyone will find something special and/or new to learn and take home.
    Reawakening-
Since CE moved out of Hungary the system has been greatly compromised by many reasons, as you are well aware of.
My intention is to offer what I learnt at Petö and how I was taught in 1980, in the hope that it would assist people in their own endeavours. (For the interest of the readers Petö passed away in 1967.)
All I can offer is my knowledge and experience. It cannot be the same, as I haven’t met Petö himself. I was under the guiding hands of Dr. Maria Hari his successor who carried the torch forward.
Petö created a system, which worked, and there are reasons for it why it worked. Some of the reasons were misinterpreted and sometimes labelled as harsh. I would like to give some explanation during the seminar to resolve this myth.
The parent and child provision has grown out of the seeds planted by Petö as well as the groups working with children with mixed diagnoses etc.
Petö left a great heritage behind with all the written recordings of designs and structures of the programmes and with the teachers who taught me the philosophy and the practice.
All I am offering with sincerity and openness what I have got and there are not many of us around outside of Hungary who are willing to do that.
I will report after the seminar and I will also encourage the attendees to do so.
    Thank you again.
    Kindest Wishes, Judit
